Dr. Bhandari Recently Honoured to Speak to the Hamilton Academy of Medicine

I was recently honoured to speak to the Hamilton Academy of Medicine 93rd Annual Conference on 27 Jan 2010 at the Hamilton Convention Centre. I am the first dentist in their 93 year history to speak to their membership. The goal was to educate you the physician, to be able to look into a patients mouth, be in at an annual exam or otherwise and be able to comment on their oral health as well as be able to deal with certain emergencies.

My Presentation Covered 5 Topics:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Dental trauma
  • Periodontal disease as it relates to heart disease, lung disease and low birth weight new borns
  • Cosmetic dentistry
  • Issues on dental amalgam, current thinking, alternatives, concers etc...

Teeth whitening was discussed in the context on who is it for, how does it work, and the types of whitening.

Dental trauma was discussed in particular how to deal with avulsed teeth and teeth that have been broken off at the gum line.

Periodontal disease was discussed with respect to what is it, its prevalence, how people with chronic gum disease are at a higher risk of heart disease, pneunomia, and low birth new borns.

Cosmetic dentistry was discussed with respect to function. If you restore function to teeth, you improve chewing, digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Finally, issues on amalgam were discussed, in particular, its composition, alternatives, advantages and disadvantages of products, what does Health Canada have to say, etc. The levels of Mercury were discussed and symptom of toxicity.
